Dill plants are a member of the celery family, Apiaceae. It is the only member of this genus that has an official state designation. In Europe, it is also called the red pill or red clover, while in North America it is commonly referred to as sweet dill. Dill plants are found widely throughout Europe, Asia, and America, but they grow very poorly in dry climates.

Dill plants are best adapted to a soil that is rich in nitrogen and is usually moist. They grow well on rocky or soil soils that have low water content, and they do well in containers that have a drainage hole in the bottom. These plants require light to survive, but they will tolerate partial shade. Their slow growth and slow-spreading habit make them very hardy, and they can withstand temperatures from moderate to extreme.
